Hailstorm At The Gold Coast

How to Protect Your Roof against Hailstorm Damage

The roof of your home is what keeps you safe from any falling element and debris. You are protected from getting wet during the seasons of rain, kept cool during the warmer months of the year, and experience snow at a very safe enclosure. However, your roof can only take so much that after being exposed to these harsh elements for so long, it has accumulated numerous damages.

This part of your home can withstand a trickle of rain or a spot of sunshine every so often, but cannot handle the beatings of very serious weather conditions, like hailstorms. If you do not prepare your roof well, the possibility of you getting injured or acquiring illnesses and diseases is significantly higher.

The best way to protect your roof from extreme weather is by preparing and fortifying it, even before the event itself. Here are some tips to protect your roof from hailstorms.

1. Fortifying Your Roof

There are many roof installments and renovation ideas you can try that can strengthen your roofs from hailstorms; sheathing and adding gables to your roof are just two examples.

2. Sheathing

You will know if your roof has sheathing if you see wood, plywood, or even wafer boards nailed to rafters or trusses of the roof. Installing sheathings on your roof will keep the roof from detaching itself from your home. However, sheathing deteriorates over time. If the surroundings of your attic begin to moisten, check the material of your sheathing. It is possible that it has swollen or has delaminated. When that happens, immediately call home restoration or renovation companies to have them replaced.

3. Gables

Gables are located at the side walls of your roof. If your gables are properly installed, your roof will be able to brace b winds. You may strengthen your roofs even further by 2x4” wood pieces in an X pattern from the top center of the end gable, to the bottom of the brace of the fourth truss; and from the bottom center of the end gable to the peak of the roof.

Types of Roofing

Inspecting and maintaining the conditions of your roof’s gables and sheathing can only get you so far. Sometimes, when hailstorms are at their peak, these installments cannot handle the assembly of hail and break under the stress. If you changed your roofing, however, the chances of your roof being separated from your home are reduced.

Here is a list of roofing options you can choose from:

  • Asphalt Shingles: Easy to install and meets class 3 and 4 impact resistance.
  • Metal: Long-lasting and lightweight. This can withstand hailstorms but often receives physical blemishes after.
  • Slate: High quality and very b. It meets class 3 or 4 impact resistance depending on the type of slate being used.
  • Tile: Solid and heavy, but long-lasting. However, it gets porous than other materials, if exposed to blowing rain.
